Frequently Asked Questions

I am a fully accredited training member of the following Dog Training and Behaviour Associations.

  • APDT Association of Pet Dog Trainers (01341)
  • ABTC Animal behaviour and Training Council
  • PACT Professional Association of Canine Trainers
  • PPG Pet Professional Guild
  • UK Behaviour and Training Charter

I have attended regular seminars, workshops, and courses for CPD. I honestly have too many to list here. There is always something new to discover about our canine partners and how they learn. If my thirst for new knowledge about dogs and dog training ever stops, then I’ll know it’s time to retire gracefully

Yes we do. Puppy classes, specialist classes and workshops all take place in purpose built, on-site school which has both indoor and secure outdoor facilities. Check social media for our classes and events.

For classes other than Puppy training classes we do not take dogs who display reactivity towards dogs or people, dogs who bark excessively or extremely fearful/anxious dogs.

We can still help though, so please contact us to discuss a private consultation to help and support you in a way that causes least stress to your dog.

Our private consultations take place on site in both our school, our out-door facilities and the surrounding area

Residential training is something we will definitely be offering in the near future. We are working on renovating the present kennels into luxury accommodation for dogs who will stay for training. If you are interested, drop us an email and we will keep you up to date.

Yes we do. I have had a long association with local rescues and have adopted and fostered dogs myself. One of my dogs, Scorch, was 4 when he came to live with us and is now 6.

I also spent a year in South Asia volunteering with a charity that worked with street dogs. It has given me a wonderful insight into how these dogs adapt in their new homes and the steps along the way.

I have a varied grounding in dog training and can cover a wide area of issues.

I am qualified and experienced in most aspects and cover the following;

Reactivity towards dogs, Predatory Chase, Recall, Rescues (UK and foreign), Anxious/Fearful dogs and more general training such as pulling on the lead, excessive barking, jumping up, not listening to you, running off to see other dogs and problems that arise during adolescence.

Yes. In my experience, any behaviour does not occur in isolation.  I always take a holistic approach as most issues are connected. We work on an individual programme in which your priorities will be our goal and come to a solution that will benefit you and your dog the most.

That depends on what you want to work on. For a brush up on skills it may take 1 or 2 sessions. For others we have 6 and 10 week programmes. It’s impossible to give an approximate length of time as there are so many variables…the dog, how much time you have to devote to training, how deep seated the problem is and what it is.

The best way to find out is to contact us to tell us about your dog in more detail and what you hope to achieve.

We have a spacious school for indoor training, and plenty of outside space in a safe, fenced environment so we can train in all weathers.

There is secure parking right next to the indoor training facility.

For Puppy classes 12 weeks.

For 121s there is no age limit. You can come the day you get your puppy. Our school is a safe environment for pups.

For classes we have 1 dog to 1 handler as its difficult for one person to manage multiple dogs in a class environment and neither will get the most out of it.

For private consultations, it depends on the issue. Please contact us for more info.

Dog/human aggression. Please contact a qualified Clinical Behaviourist. Your vet will be able to advise, and you may be able to claim on your insurance.

Separation anxiety …Separation anxiety can consist of many layers and it is imperative that a professional with extensive knowledge and practice deal with it.

There are now behaviourists who specialise in Separation Anxiety. Most use Zoom which gives you a wider choice of practitioner.

You can search for a registered practitioner on the ABTC website.

Prevention is better than a cure. Positive training builds a positive relationship

If this is your 1st dog or it’s been a while since you brought a new dog into your home, you will find dog training has changed beyond recognition. The type of training we do here at Pentlands Dog Training is not just basic obedience such as Sit, Down, Come etc. We show you the very important day to day things that will make your lives easier and more enjoyable…eg, preparing your dog to be confident and comfortable at the vets, groomers, dog walkers, in transport, how to chill at home in a café or friend’s house, how to keep your dog’s attention, ask them to leave things etc.

You will benefit from professional tips and tricks picked up over the years and sound advice based on years of experience on how to avoid problems in the future by guiding your dog in the right direction now.

Having a dog that understands what you are asking of them gives you both the freedom and ability to do so many more things together.

All this is done by reward based training that enhances your bond together. The special relationship between you and your dog will last for their lifetime and like all great relationships, it involves trust, learning and growing together and a little bit of work on both sides.

If you need help with behavioural problems, a good positive trainer will help you with a kind approach to achieve a solution. It’s best to seek help early but a qualified and competent professional on board at any point is better than none.

My goal is to create a positive relationship between you and your dog, based at all times on kindness and mutual understanding.

Our classes are 4 dogs maximum to ensure a calm and attentive atmosphere where both our clients and dogs can flourish.

Our 121s are tailored to your priorities, needs and lifestyle to make your journey with us doable, enjoyable and productive.

Classes and 121s are held at our fully enclosed venue where we have a new indoor school and secure outdoor spaces.

We use Zoom as part of our dog development programmes and can also use some other platforms that may be more convenient to you.
